Implant Supported Dentures

One of the biggest concerns that dentures patients have when they first discuss dentures with us here at Dental Care of Plano is: how will I keep my dentures in place? A full set of dentures meaning that you have no or very few natural teeth remaining can be kept in place with denture glue. But these are not foolproof and often leave a bad taste in the mouth.

In order to help dentures fit more securely and stay in place better, we now offer implant supported dentures. These are dentures that are kept in place along the gum line with the use of implants.

How Implant Supported Dentures Work

With this type of denture, only a few implants will be placed in the jawbone behind the gum. Four implants are a very common set up, and when used, this type of denture also becomes known as an all on four implant. Once the implants have healed properly, either the dentures will be attached via a small ball or stud at the top of the implants or will be attached to a thin metal bar that runs between all the implants.

A Longer Process But Worth It

Implant supported dentures require a long process, mostly at the implant stage. Depending on how long it takes your body to heal, the process between getting implants and getting the permanent denture attachment could take several months, or up to a full year. Generally, two surgeries are required for the whole process. However, once finished, these dentures will be stronger, longer-lasting, and more reliable than any other pair you’ve ever had.
