Dental Crowns/Caps and Bridges

Is your smile hidden away because of missing teeth, or severely decayed teeth? There are many reasons why we may recommend that a patient at Dental Care of Plano consider a dental crown (or cap), or a dental bridge, but hiding your smile is one of the big signs that something is wrong. Are you ready to start sharing your smile with the world again?

What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown also called a cap, is a shell that covers a tooth from the gum line all the way down. It is usually made out of porcelain or ceramic, but there are also dental crowns made from gold and other materials. There are many reasons a dental crown may be used:

  • To cover and protect a badly decayed tooth
  • To cover and protect a tooth that has had a root canal
  • To cover a tooth that is unsightly in some way
  • To create a tooth where one has been lost through the use of a dental bridge

Dental crowns are considered a restorative dentistry procedure, although they can be used for cosmetic reasons. These typically last for several decades. Crowns are custom made to the shape, size, and color of your existing teeth so that no one ever knows they are there.

What is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is used to replace a missing tooth. A dental crown is held in place in the gap by metal arms that grab the neighboring teeth. This procedure differs from dentures in that it does not include any false gum material, or is not implanted into the gum.
