How Much Does it Cost to See an Emergency Dentist?

A dental emergency requires immediate attention from your dentist. It could include a severe toothache, swelling in the gums or cheeks, a lost filling or crown, a cracked tooth, broken dentures, or a lost tooth. It is important to get professional treatment promptly to avoid further complications that could require further extensive and expensive treatment.

Fillings, root canals, dental crowns, and tooth extractions are common procedures performed during a dental emergency. This following will give you a general idea of the price for each dental emergency procedure:

A dental filling is required to restore the integrity of the tooth structure due to a cavity, minor fracture, or chip. Materials used include silver amalgam and resin. The average cost of silver amalgam filling is approximately $115 to $200 per filling, and the cost for a resin composite filling (which is white and more aesthetically pleasing) costs approximately $145 to $240 per filling.

A root canal is required when the tooth itself is infected and there is a risk that the infection may spread. The infected pulp is removed and the tooth is decontaminated to prevent future infection. The cost varies depending on the location. A front tooth is approximately $700 to $900; a bicuspid is approximately $800 to $950; and a molar is approximately $1,000 to $1,200.

A dental crown is usually done for a broken tooth. Porcelain crowns, made of ceramic materials, are the most aesthetically pleasing. It usually requires at least two visits. During the first visit, an x-ray is taken, the tooth is prepared, an impression is taken, and a temporary crown is added. At the second visit, the crown is permanently cemented and adjusted to perfect the bite. A porcelain crown costs approximately $1,200 to $1,500 per crown; and a metal crown, which is more durable and suitable for teeth in the back of the mouth, costs approximately $1,200 to $1,400 per crown, depending on the metal. Porcelain fused to metal crowns are also more durable and slightly cheaper, costing approximately $1,000 to $1,150 per crown.

A tooth extraction may be required if a tooth is so severely decayed or cracked that it cannot be repaired. Wisdom teeth may also need to be extracted if there is not enough space and causes pain. A local anesthetic is usually applied to numb the area and the tooth is removed with no to minimal pain. It costs approximately $200 to $600 per tooth.
